✝️ Ineke van Barkhuijsen, age 37 – December 3 1962, Amsterdam, Netherlands 🇳🇱💔

Ineke („Zwarte Jeanne“) had been missing for three months when her body surfaced among the ice floes in the Schinkel River on February 26, 1963. Pathologist-anatomist Dr. J. Zeldenrust could only conclude that she had died by drowning. But one could also drown after being pushed into the water. There was every reason for that thought.

For nearly a decade, until 1959, Ineke worked and lived for and with various pimps. In 1959 her father – in an attempt to get her out of prostitution – bought a flat on Burgemeester Cramergracht and a life insurance policy. In vain, it soon turned out, because at that time Ineke met Karel V., her new husband/pimp.

From now on, she no longer worked on the Red Light District, but on the roadside.

The marriage with V. was not good; he often mistreated her. To prevent a recurrence, Ineke sued him, and Karel V. was convicted. Being a pimp was (and still is) forbidden.

V.’s family was angered by sister-in-law’s behavior, and after a second indictment of V. – apparently he had been returned to grace – she was dealt with harshly…as a warning.

Ineke was kidnapped by the in-laws, but managed to talk herself free by suggesting that a friend of hers would go to the police if she was not back within a certain time.

V. fled to Paris, from where he sent her postcards…with threats. Upon his return to Amsterdam on Dec. 2, he was arrested. In fact, his wife had not withdrawn the charges.

On December 3, Ineke was last seen alive.

In 1963, interest in prostitution murders waned. The assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy took up all the front pages by the end of that year.
