Tania was born in Brighton and moved to Ipswich with her parents when she was a baby. She had a younger brother. She grew up in the Pinewood area. When her mother and father separated, she lived with her brother and mother in Woolverstone Close.
She harbored ambitions of becoming a hairdresser. After leaving school Tania worked as chambermaid and a hairdresser. She also sold Avon. When she was 15 she got a boyfriend, who introduced her to cigarettes and cannabis. Within a year or two, she was in the grip of hard drugs, like crack cocaine and heroin. At that time Tania left home to move into a hostel, before returning to live at home the following year.
She began to lie about what she was doing for a living and became argumentative, refusing to acknowledge she had a problem. Her parents recall „She had sores on her face but if you mentioned it she got upset. I walked into her bedroom when she was out and found some needles. […] but she insisted they belonged to a friend.” Tania`s father once saw her standing slightly dressed in Ipswich, asking her if she wasn`t cold, but did not realize she was in prostitution. Her mother was puzzled on more than one occasion to answer the home phone to men asking for „Chantelle“ – the name her daughter was secretly using at a massage parlour called Cleopatra’s in the town.
Tania had worked at a number of massage parlours in the town, but was asked to leave one 18 months ago. A woman called Sandra, who owned one parlour, told the Ipswich Evening Star this was because of suspicions she was using drugs. „She was a placid and quiet girl and took the news that she had to leave very well,“ she said. Sandra said Nicol`s mother had worked in the parlour as a cleaner, but not at the same time as her daughter.
A witness at court recalled Tania would always stand at the bottom of Burlington Road. She was there on a regular basis, at least once a week.
Tania was the first, and the youngest, of the five prostituted women to be killed by 48-year-old Steve Wright. Criminal Penalty: Life imprisonment, with recommendation of a whole life tariff
