Marjorie was mother of three. She was bringing up her three children alone. She had split from their father and, after being made redundant from her machinist job, she turned to „street working“ for some extra money. She was also addicted to drugs.
Marjorie was found in the River Clyde, not far from where another prostituted women’s body, that of Leona McGovern, 22, was discovered. The police said they didn’t know whether she was pushed into the river or whether she fell and stated that „no criminality had been established“ in her case. It was also noted that there were no marks on her body.
However her death was linked to the deaths of several other prostituted women in the region over the years and it was also suggested that she had been the victim of a serial killer.
She was also seen on CCTV shortly beforehand with a man on the Broomielaw, close to the river. A few weeks after her death, a man was arrested for trying to push another prostituted woman into the River Clyde. The woman managed to get away and hail a taxi and said that she didn’t want to press charges.
The man was a regular sexbuyer and one prostituted woman stated:
„He was known for being rough and being violent. That seemed to be his thing. I don’t know, but maybe the roughness was part of the thrill for him. He had no respect for women and he made that perfectly clear.“
