Camila dreamed of becoming a psychologist.
Camila’s throat was slit and her body, bound hand and foot, was found in a stream. She was murdered by john Juan Ramon Villar, age 28.
Prosecutor, Julio Rivero, had asked for life imprisonment for Villar, because he understands that the murder took place in a context of gender violence and fits the figure of „femicide“.
The court dismissed this charge that would have given Villar life imprisonment. The life and the alleged personality of the victim, who no longer had any way of defending himself, acted as a mitigating factor in the guilt of the murderer.
Camila was prostituted and was looking for a way out of her drug addiction. At the plea stage, Villar’s lawyer relied on a witness account to state that „Camila had an obsession with money“ and described her as an „empowered and manipulative“ person.
In contrast to this, the lawyer defined Villar as a „submissive and vulnerable“ man who felt „threatened“ by the victim after arguing about the amount of money he had to pay her, a sum of around 4,000 pesos. In other words, the two of them were alone in the middle of the field, she verbally threatened to tell his wife everything and thus HE was a victim.
Villar was sentenced to 20 years in prison for simple homicide.
